Distinctive Unit Insignia


Description/Blazon
A silver color metal and enamel device 1 1/8 inches (2.86 cm) in height overall consisting of three arcs from top to bottom, red, yellow and blue, above a pair of silver wings conjoined in leure, the wings within a silver scroll inscribed "OVER THE RAINBOW" in black.

Symbolism
The silver wings allude to the function of flight.  The rainbow represents the 42d Infantry Division of which the former unit was a component.

Background
The distinctive unit insignia was originally approved for the 42d Aviation Battalion on 2 August 1968.  It was redesignated for the 142d Aviation Regiment with the description and symbolism revised effective 1 October 1987.

Azure, on a pile in point Argent a rainbow of Gules, Or and the first, and in base a pair of wings conjoined in leure of the second.

Crest

That for the regiments and separate battalions of the New York Army National Guard:  On a wreath of the colors Argent and Azure, the full rigged ship "Half Moon" all Proper.

Motto

OVER THE RAINBOW.

Symbolism

The colors white and blue represent cloud and sky and the silver wings allude to the functions of flight.  The wedge shape is suggestive of support and the rainbow represents the 42d Infantry Division of which the former unit was a component.

Crest
